GMB Members Employed By Amey On Sheffield Street Lighting Strike On 2nd October In Dispute Over Pay, Sick Pay And Rights At Work

To date we simply do not have anything we can recommend to members so more strikes are now planned says GMB

Over 40 GMB members employed by contractor Amey in Sheffield as street lighting workers took strike action on Friday 2nd October over imposed pay rates, sick pay and union recognition.

Picket lines were set up at Olive Grove and Ecclesfield sites.

Peter Davies, GMB Regional Officer, said “These GMB members are in dispute over pay rates which have been imposed without consultation, over the refusal of the company to honour our recognition procedure and sick pay.

We are also seeking agreement on the use of outside contractors and agency staff. Most workers have now been given the correct rate but the company has refused to sort the matter for some members. The GMB members will not settle until all members pay issues are addressed and we have agreement on the other points. To date we simply do not have anything we can recommend to members. More strikes are now planned.

GMB has over 200 members employed by Amey in Sheffield working on their contract with the City Council. While the dispute is within street lighting only if the company continue to threaten disciplinary action for anyone refusing to cross a picket line the dispute will spread.
