David Lascelles, a member of GMB's Midlands and East Coast region, was named most inspirational individual at GMB’s 100th annual Congress in Plymouth on Sunday.
A former steelworker with a ‘ legendary’ commitment to equality has been honoured with a prestigious national award.
David Lascelles, 66, a member of GMB's Midlands and East Coast region from Scunthorpe, was named most inspirational individual in equality at GMB’s 100th annual Congress in Plymouth on Sunday.
David, who workerd for 32 years in the steelworks, spent decades fighting for equal rights and justice for the LGBT community.
A GMB activist, by the time he retired he was the "truly monumental" vice chair of the Regional Equality Forum.
David Lascelles, GMB Midlands and East Coast Region Member, said:
“I was thrilled –it’s a great honour. Humbled is the word.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all. It’ s a shame I can’ t be there to receive the award in person, but it’ s very, very nice.”
Tyehimba Nosakhere, Lead Equality Officer for GMB Midland and East Coast region, said:
“David’s commitment to equality is legendary.
“He is a very special individual, not simply because of who he is and what he says, but because of the very many people who he has affected positively in our struggle to seek equality for all.
“He has worked tirelessly as a GMB Equality Strand Lead and has been truly monumental as the Vice Chair on the Regional Equality Forum.
“I would like to say thank him for is invaluable and unforgettable help, support and guidance.
"It is my sincere belief that there are those who blessed with the gift of a positive and dynamic aura; he is one of those.”
