GMB Launch Campaign To Stop Closure Of North Wales RAF Training Camp And Export Of Jobs To Bavaria
Secretary of State for Defence will be asked to reverse decision and the Defence Select Committee will be asked look at this issue as a matter of urgency says GMB
GMB, the union for civilian staff at MOD, are launching a campaign with the support of the local MP to prevent the closure of the Fairbourne FDTC RAF Training camp in North Wales and the exporting of the jobs at the base to Bavaria.
Fairbourne FDTC RAF Training camp is one of two camps in North Wales under threat of closure.
On 20th August Mike Payne, GMB Regional Political Organiser, and Local MP, Liz Saville-Roberts met staff at Fairbourne to discuss the Governments/RAF’s decision to close these first class facilities and ship their jobs abroad.
After the meeting they announced plans to lobby the Secretary of State for Defence to intervene and to reverse this decision and to ask that the Defence Select Committee look at this issue as a matter of urgency.
Mark Jones, GMB Regional Organiser, said “Despite the camps excellent record and capacity to train hundreds of service personnel each year, the government/RAF has proposed to close the Training Camp and transfer the facilities to Bavaria.
This decision has been based on a flawed and biased report, authored by a senior officer who had a vested interest in this particular outcome.
We believe that the RAF should withdraw the report and seek an accurate report which has been compiled by an independent person or Organisation. The consultation process, or more accurately the lack of consultation process has been a sham so far, with RAF Senior Officers visiting Bavaria this week, and at the same time arranging for vital equipment to be removed from site even before a decision has even been made.”
Liz Saville-Roberts MP said “This is a further example of a Tory Government allowing jobs to be lost in Wales, despite excellent staff and facilities being available. If this decision is not reversed long standing, loyal staff will lose their jobs, and it will be a massive blow to the local economy. I will be working with the GMB to get this decision reversed as it is the right thing to do”.
Mike Payne, GMB Regional Political Officer, said “Once again the Tories are prepared to sell off the family crown jewels. This decision will effectively mean that British RAF personnel training will in future years be provided in Germany. This is clearly wrong. Wrong for the staff who will lose their jobs, wrong for the local economy, wrong for the British taxpayer, and more importantly wrong because it will lead to inferior training of RAF personnel in the future.
We intend to lobby the Secretary of State for Defence to intervene and to reverse this decision. We will also ask that the Defence select committee look at this issue as a matter of urgency.”
