Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Pickets From Midnight June 20th At 8 RAF Stations In England And Wales During First 24 Hour Strike In Pay Dispute With Contractor ISS

Members are so incensed by the contempt that ISS have shown to them thatthere will be further action until they come back to the table and have some meaningful negotiation says unions

240 members of GMB and Unite employed by ISS will be on strike for 24 hours from midnight on June 20 in 8 RAF stations in England and Wales in a dispute over pay.

The 240 GMB and Unite members are employed to provide food services, cleaning, and other services at eight RAF stations in England and Wales. The first date for strike action will be June 20 and other dates as will be notified in due course

During the strike action there will be unions pickets at these RAF stations: Cranwell, Scampton and Kirton-in-Lindsey in Lincolnshire, Valley in Anglesey, Shawbury and Cosford in Shropshire, Llanwrst in Conwy and Fairbourne in Gwynedd. Unions are still in discussion over where to place pickets near busy roads in rural locations as during the dispute they are not allowed on RAF property.

Media seeking pictures should check with the unions over the exact locations of the pickets and should go to the main entrance which is next to the guardroom at stations as follows:

These members voted overwhelmingly for strike action in an official strike ballot that concluded on May 28th. ISS were notified of the ballot result and the unions asked for more talks but there has been no movement to resolve the pay dispute at the eight bases

ISS offered a pay rise of 8p an hour from 1 October 2012 and only 2p an hour to those on the national minimum wage of £6.19 per hour. This was overwhelmingly rejected by members.

Members undertake the following roles on the ISS contract on these RAF stations: Chef, Cleaner, Bar Steward, Catering Assistant, Admin, Mess management, Mess Hand, Mess Hand/Kitchen Porter, Payroll Clerk, Receptionist, Retail Assistant, Steward/Stewardess , Storeman/Driver and Supervisor.

ISS is offering armed service personnel from RAF Waddington £15 per hour to steward the royal graduation at RAF Cranwell on that day which will be attended by the Duke of Kent. Union members would be paid £7.31 per hour for the same event.

Sian McClarence, GMB Regional officer, said "This is just the first day of action - members are so incensed by the contempt that ISS have shown to them that I don't doubt there will be further action until they come back to the table and have some meaningful negotiation with us."

Mike McCartney, Unite National officer said " The irony of offering RAF staff £15 an hour to cover ISS staff paid less than half that amount and who are in dispute over an 8p pay offer suggests a naivety bordering on the stupid.

ISS seem more intent on strike breaking than dispute resolution. GMB and Unite are calling for the Minister of State for the Armed Forces Andrew Robathan, the MP for South Leicestershire to intervene."
