Strike at Scottish Police College

Thursday, March 14, 2013

GMB Members hold 24 hour strike at Scottish Fife Police College Monday 18 th March over pay offer.

GMB attended talks with Sodexo this week in good faith but no progress was made. Unless Sodexo put more money on the table more strikes cannot be ruled out.

GMB members employed by Sodexo begin a 24 hour strike in pursuit of a pay rise to a living wage of £7.20 at Tulliallan Police College in Fife on Monday 18th March. This is the result of the failure to get an improvement of the pay offer despite two meeting between GMB and management this week.

The 20 GMB members employed by Sodexo to provide catering services at the college claim that they should receive a minimum hourly rate of £7.20 an hour. Most only earn £6.37 an hour. Following an official ballot when the workers voted unanimously for industrial action there has been an overtime ban in place at the college for the past month.

The detail of the picket line are as follows:

FROM 5.30 A.M.

FRIDAY 18TH MARCH 2013

SCOTTISH POLICE COLLEGE
TULLIALLAN CASTLE
KINCARDINE
FIFE
FK10 4BE

Richard Leonard, GMB Scotland Organiser, said “Despite two meetings with Sodexo at Tulliallan Police College this week no improved offer has been made. GMB members will therefore begin a 24 hour strike starting at 00.01 on Monday March 18th.

There will be a picket line at the main gate of Tulliallan Police College in Kincardine from 5.30 a.m. onwards.

Most of the predominantly women GMB members are paid an hourly rate which means they fall well below the Living Wage. It is the policy of the Scottish Government to back the Living Wage. It is the policy of Scottish Local Government to back the Living Wage. Central Scotland Police has recently agreed to be a Living Wage employer so all we are asking is that the new Scottish Police Authority and Sodexo get together to right this wrong.

GMB attended talks with Sodexo this week in good faith but no progress was made. Unless Sodexo put more money on the table more strikes cannot be ruled out.”

Notes to Editors

A recent demo by GMB members in support of a living wage coincided with the final ever passing out ceremony for police officers. From 1 stApril there will be a single Scottish Police Service, Police Scotland which is headquartered at the College in Fife.
