A 24 hour strike by 800 GMB members at Jacobs Biscuits factory in Aintree Liverpool due to take place tomorrow 3rd December has been suspended to allow time for talks to resolve the dispute over sick pay and the management culture in the plant.
Two days of strike action took place from 7am Sunday 23rd November to 7am Tuesday 25th November. A further 4 days planned from 7am Wednesday 3rd December to 7am Thursday 4 December, 7am Saturday 6th December, to 7am Sunday 7th December, and 7am Sunday 14th December to 7am Tuesday 16th December have now been suspended.
GMB members voted in an official strike ballot with 84% in favour of strike action.
GMB members at Aintree are renowned for manufacturing the Jacobs 'Cream Cracker' and The 'Club' Chocolate Biscuit.
Earlier last month it was announced that United Biscuits has been purchased by Yildiz which is a holding company of the Turkish Manufacturer Ulker which has pledged investment in the United Biscuits sites in the UK (and particularly Aintree) as part of becoming the third largest manufacturer of biscuits in the World.
Stuart Fegan, GMB National Officer for the food manufacturing industry, said "GMB has agreed to suspend the strike action due to take place tomorrow Wednesday 3rd December and later this month at United Biscuit’s Jacobs site in Aintree.
This is to allow Fresh Start discussions to take place between the GMB and Senior Management at United Biscuit’s Jacobs Aintree which will focus on the long term interests of the site which are vital and repairing the industrial relations at the site. We will keep our members up to date with the progress of these talks."
