GMB WELCOMES NORTHAMPTON BOROUGH COUNCIL SCRAPPING UNPAID SICK DAY

It is fantastic to see the council removing this unfair penalty – and the move will undoubtedly improve our members’ health and wellbeing says GMB Union

GMB has welcomed the decision by Northampton Borough Council to scrap unpaid sick days.

The union has long  campaigned to end the ‘unfair’ system which meant staff that are ill lost their first days’ pay.

The trade unions had been campaigning to get this unfair penalty removed.

Ian Churms, GMB Organiser, said:

“For several years there have been financial penalties in place for staff who become sick at Northampton Borough Council and we have been campaigning to get these removed.

“There are robust sickness policies in place and it was unfair to financially penalise staff who are ill.

“With the impacts of austerity being felt across the board, council staff are under immense pressure.

“It is fantastic to see the council removing this unfair penalties – and the move will undoubtedly improve our members’ health and wellbeing.”
