GMB, the union for staff in the nuclear industry, welcomed the launch of the Sellafield Women's Network on Friday 12 December at Energus, in Lillyhall, Workington, Cumbria.
At the launch there were speakers from Government, NDA, business community, senior executives from Sellafield as well as women workers from the site.
Donna Walker, GMB Northern Regional Equality Officer, said “The Sellafield Ltd Women's Network now has the real opportunity to achieve a tremendous step change to help women from across the workforce to develop their talents to the full.
GMB was represented at the event by women members who are senior health and safety representatives, equality champions and workplace representatives. They considered that the event was a success with potential for a real moving forward of the equality and inclusion agenda within the nuclear sector.
Jobs in the nuclear sector are highly skilled. Jobs within Sellafield and the supply chain are essential to regenerating the local economy, community as well as developing diverse talents. GMB welcome the opportunity to work in partnership to maximise the opportunities for women to secure these highly skilled jobs and further their careers in this sector so crucial to a carbon free energy future.”
