GMB Welcome Welsh Government Action On Fair Employment Practices On Publicly Funded Construction Projects
Great news for workers and great news for the construction and contracting sector in Wales and testament to the social partnership that exists here says GMB.
GMB, the union for construction workers in Wales, together with Unite and UCATT have given a warm welcome to Welsh Government action to ensure fair employment practices on publicly funded construction projects in Wales.
The Welsh Government launch a new procurement advice note (PAN) on Wednesday 11th March providing guidance to the public sector in Wales on ensuring fair treatment in terms of pay and employment rights through procurement in publicly funded construction and infrastructure projects in Wales.
John Phillips, Regional Secretary, GMB said: “Today’s guidance launch is great news for workers and great news for the construction and contracting sector in Wales and testament to the social partnership that exists here. We look forward to working together to ensure the effective implementation of the new PAN guidance.”
Andy Richards, Secretary , Unite Wales said: “Once again Wales is leading the way with progressive public procurement being used to promote ethical employment in Wales. For too long workers in construction and contracting sector have been exploited by unscrupulous employment practices – the Welsh Government’s new guidance is a step in the right direction in dealing with false self-employment and we would call on other governments across the UK to take heed and take action too.”
Nick Blundell, Regional Secretary, UCATT said: “UCATT has long campaigned alongside our fellow unions in construction for action to crack down on the con trick of umbrella payment companies has meant workers having to cough up to pay employee and employer national insurance contributions and other administration costs. The Welsh Government moves to tackle unfair employment practices in publically funded projects will be welcome news to many workers.”
