National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) has been in operation for over 10 years. Over that time, GMB have been campaigning to close loopholes and tighten the legislation on all aspects of the National Minimum Wage such as Apprentices, Tips.

National Minimum Wage rates from 1 October

21 and over 18-20 yrs old Under 18 Apprentice
2015 £6.70 £5.30 £3.87 £3.30
2014 £6.50 £5.13 £3.79 £2.73

£6.31 £5.03 £3.72 £2.68
2012 £6.19 £4.98 £3.68 £2.65
2011 £6.08 £4.98 £3.68 £2.60

*This rate is for apprentices under 19 or those in their first year. If you’re 19 or over and past your first year you get the rate that applies to your age.

The National Minimum Wage is set annually by the Government based on recommendations by the Low Pay Commission. GMB normally submits a response to the Low Pay Commission and gives oral evidence.

To find out if you are being paid the National Minimum wage, you need to work out your average pay and compare it with the above minimum rates.

Help or Advice?

If you think that you are being paid below the minimum wage rate, speak to your GMB Rep or Officer. You have a right to see your payment record by requesting this in writing. If an employer owes you any arrears they have to pay these back.
